This bridge over the River Deveron linking Banff and Macduff dates from 1779 and replaced an earlier one that had been swept away by a flood. Principal engineer for the construction was John Smeaton (1724-1792) The bridge was widened in 1881. The bridge carries a considerable amount of traffic, so much so that recently a study was undertaken to test local reaction for possible improvement. Amongst the schemes mooted were a footbridge to the north of the existing bridge that would enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross the river away from the traffic that at times seems to threaten the narrow walkways on the road bridge
